Well this is my first Charles Frazier and Civil war book, and being my first it was very good in my opinion of things. It has made its way to be one of my favorites. The style in writing was one point that i really loved and appreciate, it described the detail in nature and the characters surroundings. Charles F. really put a lot of work in this book and researched so much to make it. It talks a lot on the view of people during the war and how it effects everyone, it shows a deal of story's of Cherokee Indians which were cool, and i loved how he described animals especially birds. I found the story line to be creative, and yet again i loved how it was not being told after the adventure of things of years past, and how every other chapter we rotate between the main characters Ada and Inman. The characters were so very good, and even the little ones that have a shorter time in the story were described so amazingly well. They were not just the background but we began to feel for them. Ada is one favorite book character, she is not headstrong but willing to learn other things, and she is both smart and strong. Inman was also a favorite with me, he was a good man but with a bad four years behind him, he did many good things during his journey home even if they were although in some ways a sin. Ruby was an amazing character also, funny and a strong girl with a interesting past.

At first i was a little worried about the length, but once i got into it i didn't want it to end and i am so glad that i read it.

Plot: Inman a young man and Confederate soldier, who fought many a year in the bloody Civil War of north vs. south, decides to make his way home to Cold Mountain. He was badly wounded in the fight at Petersburg and is badly troubled with a mind changed by the war. Back home Ada a young woman that he loves, is waiting for him, knowing that it has been years and he might not come back alive. For Inman the journey home is a struggle, long hours of walking and almost always being hungry, Inman meets many people both friendly and dangerous. At the same time but in a different situation, Ada is struggling to keep her fathers farm in order with no knowledge to how it is suppose to be done. No matter where they go the war and its battle is always right behind them.
